STRATEGIC PLANNING: WORKING WITH ORGANIZATIONS TO ACHIEVE TRANSFORMATIONAL EXCELLENCE

By Cecilia Saffold Miller, MBA, PMP, Transformation and Technology Program Manager, HealthTeamWorks

As organizations embark on transformation a well-developed strategic plan serves as the framework for ensuring planned changes contribute to reaching defined goals and measures of success. HealthTeamWorks views transformational strategic planning as a process for engaging the right stakeholders, reaching a shared vision, analyzing organizational background data along with industry trends and risks, and providing the tools to formulate a final measurable and time-bound strategic plan.

While every HealthTeamWorks Transformational Strategic Planning process is unique, we apply some proven approaches universally:

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND RESEARCH

We gather and study information to inform a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis. Some examples of resources used to inform the SWOT analysis including organization charts, annual reports, previous Strategic Plans, key marketing materials, minutes from committee and board meetings from the previous year. Our discovery process includes key informant interviews and results in a dynamic stakeholder analysis and map.

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

We research the economic, business, and political forces impacting your organization and incorporates our findings as opportunities and threats in the SWOT Analysis.

STAKEHOLDER RETREATS AND FOCUS GROUPS

We assist in planning and facilitating staff, executive and board retreat, as well as customer focus groups. These sessions help refine vision while identifying challenges and defining strategic solutions. We apply many facilitation approaches to reach these objectives include service mapping, nominal group process, and small group deep dives into targeting discussions. When appropriate, we in one of our experienced staff members or strategic partners to speak to the industry trends impacting an organization’s industry. As we recently did when Dr. Paul Grundy provided an overview of nation-wide trends in care delivery transformation and outcomes of transformative, collaborative efforts in other markets that could create value for our client if they were to implement similar transformative strategies.

A few outcomes from the efforts outlined in Dr. Grundy’s Presentation include:

  • Improved Access, Provider and Patient Satisfaction with the Experience of Care
  • Increased average PCP income by $115K per year
  • Decreased utilization of avoidable, unnecessary, or duplicative patient services across the continuum of care resulting from better coordination of transitions of care
  • Better systems of care for patients that address social determinants of health and barriers to care patients experience in their lived environment.
